The Alaska Airlines announced it will offer a satellite-based trial Wi-Fi service during its flights to users with wireless Internet access. The service, offered by Row 44, has been in development for the past two years and will be available on the Airlines’ specially-outfitted Boeing 737-700 passenger jets. Most common features will be accessible, including web browsing, online music and games, e-mail, IM chat and connections to Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). The 60-day trial will be free and offered on afternoon flights between Seattle and San Jose, CA. After the trial period, Alaska Airlines will develop a schedule for expanding the offering to other flights and airplanes.
The Inflight Wi-Fi splash page will also have live news, music, shopping and links to practical services on Alaska’s website. Pricing for the service once the free trial is over has not been determined, as the airline is relying on customer feedback for a pricing structure.
United, American and Delta airlines all offer in-flight Wi-Fi of their own but currently only on certain flights.
