Gold selling sites seem to be all the rage. What a lot of people don’t understand is you can make money doing what you already do in World of Warcraft. And if you mine? It’s easy money anyone level five or higher can make. Most people think of epic gems, titansteel, and eternals to make money, but the fact is, people need what comes from mining at any level. So, if you’re level 10, and worrying about that mount that’s coming up at 20, you can easily make up that money before you get there, simply by using the mining skill you already have.
If you want to make money, the first thing you should do is head to the auction house. Once there, look under trade goods and see what sorts of metal, stone, and gems are up for auction. Bars and ore are always popular, people who don’t mine (or don’t want to smelt) will buy the bars, and those skilling up mining, or prospecting for gems will buy your ore. Gems are also popular, especially if you have a surplus of any gem that can be cut, so Outland and Northrend gems. Stone may or may not be popular, it all depends on the stone you have. Rough stone is plentiful, but dense stone, and even coarse stone can sell for quite a bit.
Once you’ve browsed the auction house, pull up a text file or piece of paper, and take note of the things you’re able to mine up and put for auction, and the current going rate. That rate fluctuates on a daily basis, but it’s a good starting point. Be realistic with the list: if you’re level 58, fel iron is potentially minable, but you’re not going to be able to do so without spending most of your time killing angry beasts.
Now that you have your list, go mine! Give yourself a time limit, nothing will burn you out faster than spending 8 hours mining simply to sell on the auctionhouse. An hour of mining for one or more ores should give you enough stuff to auction.
When you get ready to auctiuon off your mining materials, consider how you want to sell them. Not everything should be sold in full stacks. People need one or two items as often as they need 10 or 20. As a rule of thumb, bars should be sold in ones, twos, fives, tens, and stacks, and ore in multiples of 5. Multiples of five lets jewelcrafters prospect. Gems should be sold in singles or pairs, and stone should be sold in even amounts, or tens and full stacks. The more you sell, the more you’ll get used to what sells and what doesn’t on your server.
Pricing can take a while to get figured out; prices are different on the weekends than week days, and can also vary from one faction to the other. You’ll want to undercut your competitors, so you stuff will sell sooner, but not by so much that you end up dragging the prices way down. A few silver should be enough.
